Groundworks & External Works
Small to medium groundworks and external works across London and surrounding areas.
Our Work
Tell us what your challenge is, how the area is used and what needs to change. We will assess whether the work calls for a local repair, full replacement or further technical information before we take it on.
Excavation Trenches and Trial Pits
Some projects begin by finding out what is actually in the ground. We undertake excavation for foundations, drainage, service trenches, reduced levels and trial pits where the location, depth and purpose of the excavation are established.
The work may include:
Breaking out existing surfaces
Excavation to the required depth
Loading and removal of excavated material
Trench preparation
Backfilling and compaction
Sub-base installation
Reinstatement after the work is complete
Before excavation begins, we need information about known underground services. Depending on the site and the work involved, service drawings, scanning or other investigation may be required.
Drainage Works
Standing water, overflowing gullies, damaged channels, slow discharge and recurring blockages may be caused by incorrect falls, damaged pipework, restricted outlets or insufficient drainage for the area. We carry out private foul and surface-water drainage works, including:
New drainage runs
Channels and gullies
Chambers and manholes
Pipe bedding and installation
Drainage trenches
Backfilling and compaction
Reinstatement of concrete, paving or other affected surfaces
Before pricing, we need to understand the proposed route, available levels, connection point, access and any known underground services.
We do not undertake public sewer connections, adopted highway drainage or live utility connections unless the relevant work is designed, approved and completed through the appropriate specialist or authority.
Paving and External Works
Sunken blocks, rocking slabs, open joints, loose edges and areas holding water are often signs of a problem beneath the finished surface. Simply replacing the visible paving will not solve the problem if the sub-base, bedding, levels, falls or edge restraints have failed.
Our paving and external works can include:
Block paving
Slab and natural-stone paving
Commercial forecourts and pedestrian areas
Driveways, paths and patios
Kerbs and edging
Localised paving repairs
Lifting and relaying existing paving
Replacement of damaged blocks or slabs
Drainage channels within paved areas
Reinstatement after excavation or drainage work
Small retaining and boundary works where specified
Where existing paving is suitable for reuse, we can lift and relay it.
Commercial Yards & Hardstandings
A working yard has to cope with daily traffic, loading, turning and changing weather. Once areas begin cracking, sinking, breaking away or holding water, repeated patching may only buy time. Before recommending a repair, we look at:
How the yard is used
The vehicles and machinery using it
Where the surface has failed
The existing concrete or surface build-up
Ground levels and drainage
Access and how the works may affect the site
Some areas can be repaired locally. Others need to be broken out and rebuilt from underneath.
The work may include excavation, removal of failed material, sub-base preparation, reinforcement, concrete placement, joints, kerbs, drainage and reinstatement around the repaired area. Where vehicle loads or structural requirements need to be calculated, the required specification must be provided by the client or their appointed engineer.
Concrete Works
Cracking, uneven levels and broken edges can come from poor ground preparation, insufficient depth, unsuitable reinforcement, uncontrolled joints or water getting beneath the slab.
Depending on the project, our work can include:
Breaking out and removing existing concrete
Excavation and sub-base preparation
Damp-proof membrane where specified
Formwork and shuttering
Mesh or reinforcement installed to drawings
Concrete placement, levelling and finishing
Construction and movement joints where specified
Repairs and reinstatement against existing surfaces
Strip, trench or shallow foundations built to approved drawings
We do not provide structural design or calculate the required slab, foundation or reinforcement specification. Where this is needed, the design must come from the responsible engineer or designer.
